CHASING THE LIGHT IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

Welcome |

TO TRANQUILLIAN PHOTOGRAPHY

LANDSCAPES OF CUMBRIA BY MIKE HILTON

Hi, and thank you for taking the time to visit my website - I hope you enjoy looking through my portfolio of images & also getting to know a bit more about me as the person behind the lens capturing the scenic views.

Ashness Bridge Autumn

I've been meaning to get to Ashness Bridge during autumn for some nice afternoon light for quite some time, and this year I just about managed it. This was an image captured on my second attempt, as I was experimenting with some compositions different to the usual take on the scene. I like the dynamic flow of the water bursting in from the right side, and the way it carries you through the scene up to Skiddaw. I possibly missed the very best of the colour during what was a refreshingly good autumn overall, and I may well be trying this same shot again next year to improve it further.

What is difficult to manage is capturing this popular scene without anyone else in the scene, as the light on the trees cuts out around mid afternoon, when the spot is regularly full of holidaymakers enjoying a late lunch picnic or a photography workshop scattered around both sides of the bridge.

THE LAKE DISTRICT |  WHY I LOVE IT
The Lake District, as well as being my home for the last 5 years, is the largest of the UK's national parks, and is home to England's highest mountain and deepest lake. With over 17 million visitors a year the Lake District is also the most popular of the 15 national parks of the United Kingdom and is a favourite destination for many landscape photographers. With four mountains over 3000m and at least 16 large bodies of water, along with many iconic and idyllic views, it's easy to see why it is so revered. Epic photo potential everywhere, and plenty of adventures and exploring to be had without a soul in sight sometimes.

The Lake District is a fantastic area to photograph all year round, through Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Stunning views of lakes and mountains, spectacular valleys and dales, rivers, streams and waterfalls and fantastic forests and woodland.

Take your pick from The Langdale Pikes, Great Langdale, Keswick and Borrowdale, Ennerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale, Rydal Water, Grasmere, Windermere, Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite, Crummock Water and Buttermere. Some of the many beautiful locations I aim to capture at their best and most striking, in wild atmospheric weather, stunning sunrises, sunsets, vibrant autumn colour, or tranquil misty calm. The transient weather can completely change the essence of any view in a moment, and reveal a unique visual, wild appeal.
